4 Year University Seeking Students

Students seeking to transfer to a 4 year university after completing the MLT program may need to take specific general education courses, such as BIOL 205/206 and CHEM 130/132 in order to fulfill Illinois Articulation Initiative general education requirements. Students should consult their Student Success Advisor for more information on these courses.

Students with Transfer Credit or Completed Degrees

Students who have completed general education courses, or transfer courses that meet program general education requirements, may have an accelerated program option.

Graduation and Board of Certification Examination Eligibility

Once all program requirements are met, students graduate from the MLT program, earn an Associate’s in Applied Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician, and are eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification (BOC) Exam of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), to become certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Graduation is not contingent upon passing the BOC exam.

Clinical Experiences

Clinical experiences are arranged in laboratories affiliated with ICC to provide student rotations in each department. Such experiences may take place in the Peoria area systems, such as UnityPoint Health or OSF, as well as other affiliated laboratories throughout Central Illinois, such as HSHS and Memorial Health.

OSF Histotechnology Certificate Program

The following courses may be taken to develop additional skills for the MLT graduate or for the student interested in employment in histology laboratory. Courses are offered in cooperative agreement with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and ICC. Graduates of the Histotechnology Certificate Program are eligible to take the histologic technician certification examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

MEDLB 126 HISTOLOGY II: SPECIAL STAINS 5.0 CREDIT HRS.

PREREQUISITE: An associate degree or higher with the following: ENGL 110, MATH 098 or MATH 115; BIOL 140; BIOL 210; CHEM 120; CHEM 122, or equivalent courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.
