Program Information/Mission

The mission of the Medical Laboratory Technician program is to provide current curriculum and clinical learning experiences, to develop students' knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors, and to prepare graduates for entry level practice in each major discipline in a clinical laboratory.

Graduates are eligible to take the examination for certification as a medical laboratory technician (MLT) given by the Board of Certification (BOC) of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

For students seeking to complete a university Medical Laboratory Science program, special opportunities may exist for students who have completed an accredited MLT program. It is highly recommended students reach out to the program director for information on MLT/MLS articulation and curriculum planning.

Admission to Program

  • High School graduate with HS GPA 2.7 or higher, or equivalent OR 9 credit hours of college level classes completed with a grade of C or better.

  • Completion of MATH 096 or 098 with a grade of C or better, or placement into MATH 115 or higher.

  • Mandatory observation in a clinical laboratory, MLT student laboratory, or completion of MLT 100 or MLT 110.

  • ICC grade point average (GPA) of a 2.0 or above.

Recommended High School Subjects: 4 years English/communication; 2 years algebra; 1 year geometry; 1 year biology science; 1 year chemistry

Requirements upon Acceptance

  • Drug screen, fingerprint criminal background check, physical exam, and immunizations.

  • Documentation of current CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) BLS (Basic Life Support) Provider or American Red Cross (ARC) Professional Rescuer and BLS Provider, or ICC course HLTH 041 or equivalent, is required. This CPR certification must remain current throughout student enrollment within the health career program.

Additional Program Information

4 Year University Seeking Students

Students seeking to transfer to a 4 year university after completing the MLT program may need to take specific general education courses, such as BIOL 205/206 and CHEM 130/132 in order to fulfill Illinois Articulation Initiative general education requirements. Students should consult their Student Success Advisor for more information on these courses.

Students with Transfer Credit or Completed Degrees

Students who have completed general education courses, or transfer courses that meet program general education requirements, may have an accelerated program option.

Graduation and Board of Certification Examination Eligibility

Once all program requirements are met, students graduate from the MLT program, earn an Associate’s in Applied Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician, and are eligible to sit for the National Board of Certification (BOC) Exam of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), to become certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Graduation is not contingent upon passing the BOC exam.

Clinical Experiences

Clinical experiences are arranged in laboratories affiliated with ICC to provide student rotations in each department. Such experiences may take place in the Peoria area systems, such as UnityPoint Health or OSF, as well as other affiliated laboratories throughout Central Illinois, such as HSHS and Memorial Health.

OSF Histotechnology Certificate Program

The following courses may be taken to develop additional skills for the MLT graduate or for the student interested in employment in histology laboratory. Courses are offered in cooperative agreement with OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and ICC. Graduates of the Histotechnology Certificate Program are eligible to take the histologic technician certification examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

MEDLB 125 HISTOLOGY I: GENERAL TECHNIQUES 8.0 CREDIT HRS.
MEDLB 126 HISTOLOGY II: SPECIAL STAINS 5.0 CREDIT HRS.

PREREQUISITE: An associate degree or higher with the following: ENGL 110, MATH 098 or MATH 115; BIOL 140; BIOL 210; CHEM 120; CHEM 122, or equivalent courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.

To Remain in and Graduate from the Program

  • Earn a grade of C or better in all CHEM, BIOL, MATH and MLT courses.

  • Maintain an overall GPA 2.0 or better

  • Adhere to program policies on attendance, laboratory safety, professionalism, academic integrity, examination, and student success planning.

  • Adhere to clinical affiliate policies on safety, privacy, compliance, and professionalism.

  • Obtain at least a grade of C or better on the MLT Comprehensive Exam immediately prior to graduation.
