Program Information/Mission

The mission of the Health Information Technology program is to provide knowledge, skills, and professional attitude to prepare students for employment in diverse settings in the Health Information Management career field. Health Information Technology concepts will include but are not limited to coding, data collection, data analysis, electronic health record utilization, legal and ethical aspects, protection of health information, leadership skills, and revenue cycle management.

Admission to Program

  • High school graduate with GPA 2.7 or higher, or equivalent OR 9 credit hours of college level classes completed with a grade of C or better.

  • Grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above at ICC or last college attended OR 5 hours of required courses from program sequence with a C or better.

    Recommendations: 

  • High school subjects to complete: two years laboratory science, one year algebra.

  • Required general education courses may be taken prior to admission into the program.

  • Students should schedule appointment with a health career advisor to discuss academic plan for successful program completion.

Requirements upon Program Acceptance

  • Drug screen, fingerprint criminal background check, physical exam, and immunizations.

Additional Program Information

Health Information Technologists work in a variety of healthcare settings, including, but not limited to, hospitals, physician offices, ambulatory care clinics, skilled nursing facilities, billing offices, insurance companies, and government agencies.  

To Remain in and Graduate from the Program

Students must attain a grade of C or better in all coursework to remain in and graduate from program.
